What this free SEO audit checks
It’s not a generic test that spits out a number and calls it a day. Every point I check is one I go through by hand when I audit a client’s site, grouped into four blocks:
The essentials
What shows up in Google, and what decides whether someone clicks or scrolls past.
- Meta title: that it exists and sits between 30 and 60 characters, so Google doesn’t cut it off.
- Meta description: that you wrote it yourself instead of letting Google make one up, with the right length.
- H1 heading: that there’s exactly one.
- Canonical tag: so duplicate content doesn’t make you compete against yourself.
Indexing
The best content in the world is worthless if Google can’t or won’t index it.
- Meta robots: I detect if the page has an accidental
noindexon it. It’s the most expensive mistake there is, and more common than you’d think. - Response code and redirects: whether the URL responds cleanly or bounces around.
- HTTPS and declared language.
Content
- Text length, to see if you have enough to compete with.
- Heading structure (H2s and H3s).
- Image alt text: how many images are missing it.
- Internal and external linking, because a page with no internal links sits isolated.
Social & structured data
- Open Graph: how your page looks when shared on WhatsApp or LinkedIn.
- Twitter Card.
- Structured data (schema): what types Google detects on your page.
- Hreflang, if you have versions in multiple languages.
- Viewport and image dimensions, which directly affect mobile experience and CLS.
How to read the result
Each check comes back with one of three states, and that’s the exact order you should tackle them in:
- 🔴 Error — something is broken or missing, and it’s costing you visibility right now. Always start here.
- 🟡 Needs work — it works, but it can be improved. Usually where the easy wins are.
- 🟢 Good — you’ve already got this one right, leave it as is.
The score out of 100 is just a quick reference to see where you stand. What actually matters is the specific list of errors, not the number.
And after the audit, what?
This tool tells you what’s wrong with a page’s technical and on-page SEO. It’s the first step and it solves a lot, but I’ll be honest about what it doesn’t cover: it doesn’t analyze your keywords, your competitors, your external backlinks, or the search intent behind what people actually type into Google.
If you want to fix what you find yourself, I have articles on the SEO for Google blog that walk through each of these tags point by point. And if you’d rather have a person review it and tell you what to move first for your specific business, you can book a free SEO consultation with me and we’ll go through it together.
Frequently asked questions
Is the SEO audit really free?
Yes. No signup, no email, no limit on how many times you run it. Paste the URL and see the full result instantly. I built it because these are the same checks I’d already coded into my Chrome extension, and there was no reason to keep them to myself.
Does it analyze my whole site or just one page?
It analyzes the specific URL you give it. If you want to check several pages, run it once per page. My advice: start with your homepage and the two or three pages you most want to rank, which are usually your service or product pages.
Does it work for any site, or only WordPress?
Any site. The tool reads the HTML your site actually serves, so it doesn’t matter whether it’s built on WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Webflow, Astro, or by hand. It just needs the URL to be public and reachable.
Do you store the URLs that get analyzed?
No. The analysis runs and the result is returned; nothing gets stored or tied to anyone. I don’t ask for your email either, so there’s nothing saved to show you later.
Why is my score low if my site looks great?
Because a site looking good and Google understanding it are two different things. Most of the errors this audit catches are invisible to a visitor: tags missing from the code, images without alt text, missing structured data. A beautiful site can be a disaster for search engines, and that’s exactly the most common case I run into.
If I fix all of this, will I rank on Google?
It’ll help, but I’d be lying if I said it’s enough on its own. This covers technical and on-page SEO, which is the foundation — without it, nothing else holds up. On top of that you need content that genuinely answers what people are searching for, and authority. If you want to know where to go next, start here.
